N: Present yourself (all of you)
The Rumjig Core who met in studying in music and sound is Manchester in 2001 is Jules Gordon (Singer), Ed Shred (Bass player) and Ben Bielicki (Eleccy guitar). Now we also have Rob Price (trumbone), Myo (Saxophone) and Dennis (Trumpet ) who make up our sensational brass section who have made our dreams of having a brass section come true and our latest member is Mark O’ Brien on Drums.
N: When and how Rumjig was born as a band ?
Jules and Ed both grew up in little villages on either side of the country but wanted to meet musicians to pursue their musical dreams so they both applied to and studied HND Music Performance at Manchester City College. Ed was in the year above Jules and they just met one day in the corridor as Ed (bass) was looking for a vocalist to work with. Ed had a next door neighbour called Ben who he jammed with daily so when Jules came round to listen/ jamm with to Ed’s ideas they all met to jam and decided they needed a drummer to make it a full sound. That was in 2001! We found an awesome drummer and wrote and gigged about Manchester for 4 years but the city didn’t really get us musically so we split up and Jules went busking and hitching round New Zealand for 10 months to improve her confidence, Ed went back home and then travelling to Asia while Ben stayed in Manchester for little while playing in other bands before moving back to his home city, Liverpool. Whilst Jules was in New Zealand she kept dreaming of getting Rumjig back together and going on tour, making an incredible album and doing the UK festivals so when she returned and settled in Liverpool, ED came back up and they found a new drummer Eliot budd to start up with and that is who drummed on our latest album. In Christmas 2012, we finally plucked up the courage to do a crowdfunder to raise £5500 in 55 days to be able to fund the production of the recent album. These were some very exciting 55 days!!! After recording the core of the album though, Budd decided to leave Liverpool to start a family with the soon to be wife down south. This was very sad for us, like losing a brother! But we picked ourselves up and kept going – so over the last 4 years we have been recording, writing the album, training up drummers, brass players, backing vocalists so we were finally in a position with a completed AWESOME album and full 10 piece band for the album launch last November. This is an exceptional concert for us and was held in The Magnet. It’s taken a lot of hard work, patience, strength, sweat, love, laughter and tears to get here but finally we have done it!!! Now we are writing new songs and looking forward to touring the Uk and selling our debut album.
N: The music scene in Liverpool and in Uk
The Liverpool Music scene has been great for us because of awesome events and promoters such as Fiesta Bombarda, The Speakeasy’s. Positive Vibrations and Threshold festival. We are very grateful to these guys for all the hard work they do to keep the Music scene alive and buzzing! We are now part of the Fiesta Bombarda agency which is awesome as they have been getting us gigs in Liverpool and around the UK. The UK festival scene is so big now and this year we are hoping to be playing at Beatherder for the 10th time in a row, BoomTown, Electric Picnic, Solfest and Eden festival. We are also playing London Hootenanys in Brixton on March 11th and Headlining Saturday Night in the Brookhouse 29th April for the Smithdown Road Festival
N: Do you feel European ?
Yes because my (Jules) mum is half french so yes I do feel european…half european 😉
N: How do you see the future of music
I think the future of music is more and more bands DIYing it. With Crowdfunders, easier ways to make websites via WIX, Facebook, Youtube. If your music is boss, you have a great live show and have good social media content then people who want to find you they will…. It could maybe cool if PR companies became agents and made a cut off the gigs / cd sales in return for helping with their PR skills to get your name out and loud?
N: Describe your style in one word
S.P.I.C.Y
N: Now your studio, the place where you usually create your music
We don’t currently have a studio /rehearsal space so we are usually writing the core structures at Ed =,, then I’ll take it home and work on the main melody/structure/ Lyrics. Then we all meet up in a hired space at The Vulcan and develop the songs through jamming recording and rehearsing them to death! We are desperate to find our own space but since the Dale street rehearsal spaces got shut down its really hard to find a space with windows and I refuse to
rehearse in a room with no windows and 6 stinky boys! Haha! 😛
