Lo scorso sabato 5 Novembre ho avuto l’onore di assistere al concerto di uno dei gruppi che nella mia personale vita e carriera artistica hanno rappresentato e tutt’oggi rappresentano un punto di riferimento , The Cinematic Orchestra. Nato per volontà del dj e produttore Jason Swinscoe , il loro primo album risale al 1999 ( “Motion”) e nonostante l’età questo progetto mi soprende di volta in volta. Ospitato dall’O2 Arena di  Manchester  le porte erano aperte dalle ore 19:00 e ad allietare l’attesa con un dj set decisamente eclettico, c’era un’altro grande nome della famiglia Ninja Tune, Mr scruff. Ad anticipare TCO c’era anche la Submotion Orchestra con un live di warm up degno di nota. The Cinematic Orchestra apre il concerto con intro in quartetto d’archi diretto dal maestro Miguel Atwood Ferguson e di seguito calssici come ” Burn out “ o ” The child song “, fino all’ultimo singolo della band ” To Beleive ” con la voce di Moses Sumney.

Durante lo show di ben 2 ore ogni componente della band ha un suo ruolo fondamentale ed un suo spazio partendo dal sassofonista Tom Chant con un suo personale intervento solista di sample looping, al batterista Luke Flowers, ai vocals di Heidi Vogel , alla voce solista di Melanie de Biasio. Il concerto si chiude con un personale rivisitazione di uno dei pezzi più noti, utilizzato in diversi spot e pubblicità varie ed eventuali in TV, dal titolo ” To build a home “ di L.D. Brown anche noto come Grey Reverend. Questa band ha ancora una volta dimostrato di avere la capacità di creare atmosfere evocative suscitando forti emozioni al proprio pubblico in una chiave definitivamente jazz e come si evince dal nome , cinematica.

Last Saturday 5th of November, I was there, at the O2 Apollo in Manchester for The Cinematic Orchestra, one of my favourite and most inspiring band. Born from initiative of the dj and producer  Jason Swinscoe, their first album (Motion) was released in 1999 by the independent label Ninja Tune, in spite of the “age” this band still suprise me again and again. The doors were open at 19:00 and Mr scruff was on the wheels, eclectic! After the Submotion Orchestra warm up performance, band from Counter Records (Ninja tune sublabel), was the time of The cinematic orchestra a 2 hours journey trough classics like “Burn out” , ” The child song” till the last release ” To beleive “. Well known members and guests , the maestro Miguel Atwood Ferguson (strings), Tom Chant (saxophone , looping), Luke Flowers (drums) , Heidi Vogel (vocals) , Melanie de Blasio, L.D. Brown known as Grey Reverend revisited the famous ” To build a home “. Quoting a review on skiddle: ” The show, perhaps because of the band’s name and origins – creating film and short-film soundtracks – felt like a motion picture in itself. The narrative shifted regularly under spotlights and between founding band members, acclaimed session musicians and spine-tingling vocalists who together make up one of the UK’s most innovative and influential musical entities”.
