Joao Pedro Egreja ak Ch.ear.ch, giovane dj e produttore Drum and Bass portoghese, ci racconta in questa nuova Intervista Analogica la sua estrema dedizione e passione per questo genere musicale senza mai tralasciare il suo senso di appartenenza e l’attaccamento alla propria terra e la sua città , Lisbona.

N: Presentati con una piccola scheda
Sono Joao Pedro Egreja alias Ch.ear.ch e sono DJ e produttore di Drum and Bass. Ho 22 anni e vengo da Lisbona, in Portogallo e vivo attualmente a Liverpool, nel Regno Unito

N: La Drum and Bass per te
La Drum and Bass per me è tutto, so solo che se sono quello che sono oggi e se ho delle aspirazioni per quanto concerne la mia carriera è soprattutto grazie alla Drum and Bass. Mi sono innamorato dalla prima volta che entrai in un club, avevo 16 anni, non sapevo neanche cosa stessi facendo, ma al mio primo passo lì dentro, oh mio dio! E’ cambiato tutto nella mia vita, perché non avevo mai visto una cosa del genere, ai tempi frequentavo molti concerti rock, ma quando ho visto la potenza che questo genere di musica stava dando alla folla, ero stupito, Il pubblico ballava come se fosse una sola persona, un solo corpo, non so se è lo stesso in altri paesi, ma in Portogallo è davvero una scena molto particolare e pura. Non ho mai assistito risse all’interno di un party o festival o di DnB nel mio paese, in fondo, le persone sono lì per ballare e ascoltare la musica.

N: Real dj e true culture
Ci sono molti sotto-generi nella Drum and Bass questo molto interessante: Liquid , neurofunk, Jump-up questi chiaramente sono solo tre esempi delle diverse forme di DnB, poi chiaramente ognuno ha le sue preferenze.La Drum and Bass segue davvero una cultura differente, non credo di aver mai visto fake DJs è davvero una piccolo movimento , ci si conosce tutti bene o male, si collabora tra artisti, si fan molti remix ad esempio , solo i ” veri ” rimangono alla fine.

N: Il tuo paese, la tua città, il tuo cuore
Il Portogallo, è il paradiso in terra ed è proprio dietro l’angolo, tutto è bello. Abbiamo il buon cibo, belle spiagge, bellissimi paesaggi ,tutti sono molto gentili. In Portogallo abbiamo solo un problema, è molto difficile guadagnare dei soldi, un giovane ragazzo si trova molto limitato per questo motivo, ma se hai un buon reddito o comunque disponibilità puoi fare tutto in Portogallo, è decisamente basso il costo della vita e le leggi non sono poi così limitative come nel resto d’Europa. Ecco perché amo il mio paese, non potrei mai lasciare il Portogallo, più precisamente Lisbona. E’ una città molto cool e decisamente rilassata. E’ il mio posto.

N: Ti senti Europeo?
Senza dubbio, abbiamo tutti i privilegi dei paesi sviluppati, non posso lamentarmi.

N: Vinile o Digitale
Entrambi, Mi piace sia l’approccio della “vecchia scuola”, la qualità era decisamente migliore, si percepiva il vero gusto della musica, avevi un oggetto “fisico”, ma allo stesso tempo devo ammettere che senza la rivoluzione digitale la musica non si sarebbe mai sviluppata e diffusa così in fretta, questi ultimi 20 anni sono stati sorprendenti e siamo ora in grado di fare cose che non avremmo mai potuto immaginare senza le tecnologie digitali.

N: 5 artisti top per la vita
In questo devo fare 2 liste, una DnB e una più generale, perché sono molto diverse, nella DnB ho un approccio più tecnico per il resto è il messaggio, il messaggio creativo che un artista trasmette. Nella DnB è difficile ma direi Calibre, LSB, Emperor e ovviamente i potenti NOISIA sono assolutamente senza precedenti in questo genere; Pel resto la scelta è decisamente più semplice, Bob Marley, Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Dave Grohl (Nirvana e Foo Fighters), Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit) e Seu Jorge.

N: Che cosa stai ascoltando ora?
Ora sto ascoltando elettronica, sono sempre alla ricerca di nuova musica, partendo dalla DnB, che è più del 50% trovo molto interessanti artisti come Flume, FKJ, Gramatik, Disclosure e Parov Stelar.

N: Quanto è importante la musica nella nostra società?
Non so come sarebbe la vita senza la musica, l’umanità e l’arte non può vivere senza, gli esseri umani hanno il desiderio ardente di creare. Nel caso della musica, ho trovato questa citazione che spiega molto bene la mia visione in relazione alla musica e quanto sia importante per la nostra società. ” The interaction with sound is unavoidable, either to make it or take pleasure in it. People have always found music significant in their lives, whether for enjoyment in listening, the emotional response, performing, or creating. This is no different for classical music or contemporary concert music. Both kinds of music have immense worth for our society; however, the problem we all know in this field is that this music is little known and hence underappreciated. As a musician and artist, it is my responsibility that others can learn to enjoy the art for which I have utter passion.” (Gilbert Galindo ndr )

Joao Pedro Egreja ak Ch.ear.ch young potuguese dj and producer on Drum and Bass, tells us in this new interview his extreme dedication and passion for this kind of music never forgetting his sense of belonging and attachment to their land and his city, Lisbon.

N: Present Yourself
I am Joao Pedro Egreja aka Ch.ear.ch and I am DJ and Producer of Drum and Bass. I am 22 years old and I’m from Lisbon, Portugal and I am current living in Liverpool, U.K.

N: The Drum and Bass for you
The Drum and Bass for me is everything, I just know that if today I can say what I want to be in life and if have some career aspirations it’s partial because of Drum and Bass. I felt in love since the first time I have listened in a club back when I was 16 years old, I did not know what I was really doing, but when I first stepped into the club, oh my god! was a complete change in my life, because I’d never seen a thing like that and at the time I was going to a lot of rock concerts but when I saw the power of that kind of music was giving to the crowd, I was amazed, everybody is moving and dancing like one, I do not know if it’s the same in other places but in Portugal it’s really a very cool and pure environment. I’d never seen any fight or robbery inside of a DnB party or festival in Portugal, basically, all the people are there to dance and hear the proper sound.

N: Real DJs and True Culture
You have a lot of sub-genres inside of Drum and Bass what is very cool. You have Liquid, Neurofunk, Jump-Up and this is just three examples of the different forms of DnB, people can choose what they like in Drum and Bass.Drum and Bass it’s really a different music culture, a don’t think that I can say that DnB has fake DJs or something near of that, it’s really a small culture so everyone know each other, the culture have a lot of collaborations, remixes and we that connection between artists only the true guys remain.

N: Your country, your city, your heart
Portugal, it’s the paradise on earth and it’s just around the corner, everything is beautiful.We have everything in Portugal, good food, beautiful beaches, we have a beautiful countryside also and everyone is friendly. Portugal have just one problem, it’s very difficult to earn money, as a young guy you cannot do a lot of things, but if you start to have money you can do everything in Portugal because is cheap, and the laws are no so restricted like the rest of the Europe, so thumbs up on that.That’s why I love my country, I cannot leave without Portugal more precisely Lisboa. It’s a very cool and chilled city. It’s where I belong

N: Do you feel European?
Off course, we have all the privileges of developed countries, we have everything, I cannot complain.

N: Vinyl or Digital
Both, I like the old school way of listening and playing music, the quality was better, you had the real taste of music, it was a physical object, you could feel more the music but at the same time without the digital revolution music would not develop so fast, this last 20 years were amazing for music and we can do things that we could never imagine without the digital technologies.

N: 5 top artists for life
In this one I have to do 2 lists, in DnB and in the rest of the music scene because they are very different, in DnB for me it’s more technical they are more like producers, and in the rest it’s the message, the creative message that an artist has,the perspective of doing electronic dance music is different, so where we go. In DnB is difficult but it’s Calibre, LSB, Emperor and off course the mighty NOISIA and the unmatched Break; in the rest it’s a little bit easier, Bob Marley, Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Dave Grohl (Nirvana & Foo Fighters), Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit) and Seu Jorge.

N: What and who are you listening now?
Now I’m just listening to electronic music, I am always looking for new music so it’s a bit normal. I listen to a lot of DnB, really really a lot, more than 50% of the music that I listen is DnB and besides that, I am listening to guys like Flume, FKJ, Gramatik, Disclosure and Parov Stelar.

N: Why is music important in our society?
I do not know how would be life without music, humankind and art cannot live without each other, humans have the burning desire to create. In the case of music, I found this quote that explains really well my vision in relation to music and how it’s important to our society. “The interaction with sound is unavoidable, either to make it or take pleasure in it. People have always found music significant in their lives, whether for enjoyment in listening, the emotional response, performing, or creating. This is no different for classical music or contemporary concert music. Both kinds of music have immense worth for our society; however, the problem we all know in this field is that this music is little known and hence underappreciated. As a musician and artist, it is my responsibility that others can learn to enjoy the art for which I have utter passion.”

N: Forthcoming projects
For a near future, I am working on my album, Notul, under the name Ch.ear.ch. I am also working on opening a label, for now, the name is secret, but I and some folks are working on it and along side with that a want to create other projects besides Ch.ear.ch and get out a little from the DnB.
